Project 1, Week 1

Chess Board-erlands. (♙/♟)

For this first project we were asked to read a short story, “Apologia” by Barry Lopez to later answer a series of question with respect to the lecture.

There were two questions that helped me nail down the concept of my project, What do you wish more people respected? And what can you do to change that? I wish more people respected the immigrants, our stories, background, and journeys. As an Afro-Latina immigrant, it is my responsibility to shine a light on subjects that other wise probably wouldn’t be in the conversation.

I am telling the story of two different societies divided by their economic classes, ethnicities, nationalities, and even their languages. This will be accomplished by using pawns; the most numerous and powerless pieces in the game of chess, which symbolizes us, the underdog working class.

My goal is to create a chess board with a rustic look inspired by the colors and textures of the desert. To accomplish this I am experimenting with adding grog and other materials to the clay to simulate that effect on the tiles. This following week I will be testing ways to tint clay to make the dark tiles seen on a traditional chess board.
